How to get to the Isle of Skye | Road | Rail | Air | Sea

A trip to Skye is incredibly rewarding and as a result of the relatively new road bridge is easier than ever before to reach Skye by car. Skye can also be reached by ferry. Below you will find a short description of each.

ROAD | The Skye Bridge is along the A87 by the Kyle of Lochalsh on the Scottish mainland. These happen to be some of the best driving roads in the UK.

FERRY | If arriving from the Scottish mainland you have two choices.

A regular service from MALLAIG (on the mainland) to ARMADALE on Skye. There are frequent sailings in the summer (approximately eight departures per day) and daily sailings during the winter months. Caldeonian MacBrayne run these services – www.calmac.co.uk

The second option is by far the most scenic route to Skye and most certainly the oldest. It is the shortest distance between Skye and the mainland at about 550 metres. The Skye Ferry is the last manually operated turntable ferry in Scotland and is now owned and run by the local community. Operating between easter and October this is a sensational way to arrive on Skye – www.skyeferry.co.uk

There are some other routes you may not have considered.

AIR | Although not open to commercial flights the airstrip in Broadford on Skye is still used by amateur pilots.

RAIL | The Jacobite express used in the Harry Potter films (‘the Harry Potter’ train) is an unforgettable journey which will take you from Fort William to Mallaig where you can cross to Skye on the ferry. There are also trains to the Kyle of Lochalsh where you will be able to hire a car – www.scotrail.co.uk or for the steam train – www.westcoastrailways.co.uk
